For me, "giving a damn" means to be able to evaluate circumstances, choices and decisions in a way that concludes with the best avenue to serve everyone involved. It means to do "the right thing" in all opportunities to do so. To make the right choice, the good choice, even when it's not the most profitable for myself as principal benefactor. (Because doing the right thing for the benefit of the whole, the community or the relationship DOES benefit me, ultimately) But, basically, it's to put others first when it is feasible to do so. Not in compromise of self, but in as much as possible, to live with the welfare of others in mind in all things.
